Through a service design project, we delved into the daily lives and challenges of municipal technical directors and leveraged our knowledge of multi-location living to create a model for developing new business. How did we do it

Stepping into the Lives of Technical Directors

We began the design project by examining the client’s current business process from both a system and business perspective through interviews with company representatives. Based on these interviews, we compiled observations into three separate Service Blueprints of the new business process. Through active interaction with the client, we could precisely define the challenge we were addressing.

We also identified different customer personas for whom the new service is being developed. The visualisation methods and various perspectives used in service design helped us find a common and desired direction for the project. We further explored the end-customer world by interviewing municipal technical directors and one municipal manager, identifying general challenges and future development aspirations of the region's municipalities.

Close Interaction Throughout the Project

Throughout the intensive project, we held weekly meetings with the client to exchange ideas and refine our goals actively. Design methods supported us in achieving these goals. We also strongly leveraged our expertise from a previous multi-location living study conducted for Suur-Savon Sähkö, applying it to understand future challenges and potential solutions for our region, enabling small municipalities to succeed together.

From these insights and gathered information, we developed a new business development concept for Järvi-Saimaan Palvelut that considers both technical solutions and social model perspectives. We created a visual presentation of the concept, which Järvi-Saimaan Palvelut could use to present their new business development plan to their board and other stakeholders.

What did our customer get

Support for Decision-Making

The design project enabled the client to clearly communicate their solidified vision to key stakeholders. Based on the concept model we designed, the company could also decide to pursue new business ventures.

The design process helped the client expand their thinking from a technical solution and process model perspective to also include social models, significantly broadening the overall view. The Service Blueprints and persona descriptions will serve as excellent foundational materials for future business process descriptions as the data is deepened and enriched.

New Perspectives and AI Opportunities

During the process, we also identified opportunities to utilise artificial intelligence in the new business venture, helping the client design their business using today's possibilities and recognizing efficiency and cost savings.
